Virtual Cocktail

Overview

Virtual Cocktail is an interactive system capable of conveying taste, smell, and visual stimuli to augment flavor sensations.

Background

This project is based on knowledge and findings from previous projects such as Digital Flavor, Virtual Sweet, and Taste+.

Key Problem(s)

There is a lack of digital means to augment flavor sensations to stimulate human chemical senses such as taste and smell.

Objective

To combine digital taste technology with smell presenting techniques and visual simulation to create novel flavor experiences on top of existing drinks.

Solution

The system allows users to experience virtually flavored beverages on top of plain water or an existing drink. The experience of virtual flavors starts when the users look at the color-overlaid drink, smell it, and continues when they place their tongues on the two silver electrodes to drink while natural food aroma is delivered to their nose.

Virtual Cocktail’s novelty lies in its ability to switch between taste modes (salty, bitter, sour) and aromas (three chambers), allowing users to explore and experimentally create new flavors. The device can be remotely controlled via smartphone through Bluetooth connection, enabling users to create multiple combinations.

Deployment and Usage

Virtual Cocktail was showcased at the following locations:

  • ACM Multimedia 2017 Conference
  • Innovfest Unbound 2018
  • FutureMe 2018

Impact

The ability to control and overlay taste and smell sensations opens up new possibilities in interaction, which were previously limited.
