AR for LKC Natural History Museum
Collaborators
This project was done in collaboration with Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (LKCNHM) and ITE College Central.
Overview
Facilitating retrieval of exhibit information through augmented reality (AR).
Background
LKCNHM currently has a web app from which visitors can use to view object labels. However, user experience can be improved by requiring less user navigation effort while providing more information.
Key Problem(s)
Due to space and design constraints, museum labels are located relatively far away from the exhibits, making them less accessible.
Solution
Using a mobile application, museum visitors can point at an exhibit with their smartphone and select an item of interest to view its object label, 3D model and related video. The exhibit being viewed is determined through image recognition and translucent overlays are added on the exhibit, which can be tapped on for more information. On top of providing a better user experience over the current museum web app, it is also possible to analyze visitors' engagement with the different exhibits.
