Taste+ aims to promote a healthier lifestyle by replacing the unnecessary amount of condiments in our daily consumption. It overlays virtual taste sensations on food and beverages and enables people to experience digitally augmented taste sensations while eating and drinking. To achieve this technology, while eating and drinking, we use weak and controlled electrical pulses on the tip of the tongue and overlay different colors using RGB Light Emitting Diode (LED). The ability of this technology to simulate primary taste sensations such as salty, sour, and bitter has made us able to merge this technology into everyday eating and drinking utensils such as a spoon, beverage bottle, chopsticks, and soup bowl, thus to augment the taste sensations of food and drinks.
Taste+ utensils send controlled electrical pulses to the users' tongue through the silver electrodes attached. By controlling the frequency (200Hz – 1000Hz) and the amplitude of current (20µA – 180µA), we are able to enhance taste sensations perceived by overlaying virtual taste sensations such as salt, sour, and bitter. Different dials or button interfaces on the utensils allow users to change these settings thus augmenting the real taste sensations of food and beverages. Additionally, different colors of the RGB LEDs provide an additional layer of visual stimulation to make the taste sensation more accurate and visually more appealing. The red light corresponds to red wine - bitter mode, green light corresponds to lime green - sour mode, and the blue light corresponds to ocean blue - salty mode.
